Easy chocolate frosting made from scratch with only 5 ingredients.
3 tablespoons butter or margarine, softened
1/4 cup cocoa powder
1 1/3 cup powdered sugar
2 tablespoons milk
1/2 teaspoon vanilla extract
Combine the butter, cocoa powder, powdered sugar, milk, and vanilla in a large bowl.
Beat to a spreading consistency with a mixer, adding extra milk as needed to get the desired consistency.
One batch makes enough for an 8 or 9-inch layer cake. You can double the recipe for a 9x13 cake.
For a smoother frosting, sift the cocoa powder and powdered sugar before adding them to the butter to remove any lumps.
To boost the chocolate flavor, you can add an extra tablespoon of cocoa powder, but you might need to adjust the amount of milk to maintain the right consistency.
If the frosting becomes too thick, add milk by the teaspoon until it reaches your desired consistency. If it's too thin, add small amounts of powdered sugar until it thickens up.

Great lil recipe! Out of lazy was I melted my butter then added all my other ingredients, keeping powdered sugar to one cup for deeper chocolate flavor. Worked perfect! Didn't even need a hand mixer!

Delicious and so easy. I went right by the recipe, making no adjustments or changes and it came out perfect. It was just enough to frost one 9" layer. It looks great and tastes so good. It's super super sweet I would just recommend a half cup of powdered sugar.
The frosting will be runny if you decrease the powdered sugar that much.

I needed a quick and easy chocolate frosting recipe for my kids' cupcakes today and found this one. I mixed it in steps. First I creamed the butter, then slowly added the cocoa and milk. Once that was all mixed, I started to add the powdered sugar and vanilla a little at a time. I doubled it to frost 24 cupcakes and added a bit more milk to make it more spreadable. My son is a chocoholic and agreed that this was really tasty, just enough chocolate flavor (didn't need to add more cocoa) and just very good. I will be using this recipe again and again in the future!

Just made this, it's super yummy! I used ghirardelli cocoa powder and it came out super rich and chocolatey. You definitely need more milk than the recipe calls for but it does say "add milk as needed to thin." Easy and tastes good!

This is my first attempt at making frosting and it turned out great! Very chocolatey and thick. I ran out of vanilla, so had to skip that ingredient. I put the frosting in a zip lock bag, cut a corner off and used that to ice some cupcakes. My kids loved it!

Sorry that the recipe didn't work for you. As you can see from our photo, we had good luck with it. If it was runny AND chunky that would imply that maybe you didn't mix it completely? It should be smooth and fully mixed. Many others have had great success with this recipe so I hope you'll give it another try.

Good recipe! I did some tweeking, added a bit more powdered sugar (had a strong cocoa taste) and I also added 2 T of peanut butter! If you add peanut butter, add a bit more milk because it gets a little thick. Tastes yummy!

i doubled the recipe and did a tiny bit of tweaking (it tasted great before the tweaking too)..i added a little more powdered sugar and 2 cap fulls (about 1 1/2-2 tbs for the doubled recipe) of vegetable oil to give it a little bit of shine and it looks and tastes great! ..now i have to wait for my cupcakes to finish so i can ice them!

To the other reviewer, clearly your review is fake and meant solely to bring down the value of this recipe for whatever reason since you didn't seem to even make it since you didn't provide any details. I use this frosting all the time and it comes out perfectly. PERFECTLY. I have no idea what your expectations were of a frosting recipe but this is PERFECT FROSTING.

I registered just to point out that this garbage recipe ruined my cake. Go elsewhere, seriously. I am an experienced cake maker and thought I would try this and it was just horrid.
You're an experience cake maker yet you couldn't give better reasons why this recipe didn't work? Not a helpful review if you can't explain what went wrong. Simply saying it's "garbage" isn't helpful or descriptive. Others have had success with the recipe so it would be helpful to hear why your version didn't turn out. You also gave it 5 stars... ?

This is great, I should mention only because no one else here seemed to, that you should use dutch process cocoa not the regular type. It really makes a difference. I also beat mineat a higher speed quite a bit and it had an airy, satiny, texture that was really good!

This is a great recipe for chocolate icing!! Not too thin or thick, you could put it into an icing bag, but I would do this with caution as it has a decadently rich flavor. It's not too sweet, which makes it good for all!! I made it for the first time tonight, & I've added it as a favorite already!!

I think the difficulty rating can be a bit misleading. It was actually quite easy to make and what was great is that this recipe calls for 1/2 the powdered sugar that most the other popular recipes require. The only tip I could add is that I used a whisk to get it started just to keep from causing a dusty mess with the blender. But the frosting is great, poured over nice and smooth and didn't run all over the place. I give it a 6 out of 5!

I use this recipe all of the time. It's super easy to remember even when I don't have the recipe around. It's quite a sweet one, but I love sweet frostings. I use it for all cakes/cupcakes that I make. It works especially well with tart lemon cakes. Really good balance of tart and sweet. I find that depending on the day/weather I use a little less milk or a little more milk. I do it with soy milk too and I don't notice a difference. :)

it was good, but it was thin. i accidentally added an extra trablespoon of milk and i was using soy milk so maybe that was why. i liked it, but my brother said it was so thin he couldn't even taste it. that's kind of silly, granted.
